What to build in this space

The passing siding is the single most valuable piece of track you can add, because it turns watching a train into operating two.

The other thing worth planning early is access. A 72 inch wide table needs to be reachable from at least one long side, and anything beyond about 30 inches of reach means track at the back that cannot be re-railed without crawling onto the layout.
