Car weight is the most under-appreciated variable in reliable operation. A car that is too light climbs the rail when pushed through a turnout, stringlines off the inside of a curve when the train is long, and derails in ways that look random because the fault only appears under particular conditions.
The NMRA publishes Recommended Practice RP-20.1 to fix exactly that. It gives each scale an initial weight plus an amount for every inch of car body length, so longer cars get proportionally heavier.
Measure the car body, not the length over the couplers. This is the most common error in applying the standard: the coupler boxes add a fraction of an inch at each end and push the calculated target high.

RP-20.1 does not publish figures for every scale. Where a scale is absent, weight cars empirically until they track reliably and then match the whole fleet to that figure.
Target weight by car length in HO scale

A 5.5 inch HO boxcar, which is a 40 foot prototype car, should weigh 3.75 ounces or about 106 grams under RP-20.1.

Where to put the weight, which matters as much as how much
Weight in the wrong place is worse than no extra weight at all. Three rules cover it.
- As low as possible. A high centre of gravity makes the car want to tip on a curve, which is the exact failure you are trying to prevent. Weight glued under the roof is actively harmful; weight on the floor is right.
- Balanced end to end. A car heavier at one end loads one truck and lifts the other, and the end that lifts is the end that derails. Check each end separately if you can.
- Secured so it cannot move. Loose weight that slides when the car brakes turns a reliable car into an intermittent one.
Self adhesive lead-free stick-on weights sold for balancing car wheels are the usual choice, because they are dense, flat and already sticky. Steel washers glued to the floor also work and take more space. Avoid anything that will corrode over years inside a sealed model.
Weight is the third fix, not the first
Weighting a fleet and leaving plastic wheels under it wastes most of the benefit, and weighting a car whose real problem is a coupler fixes nothing at all. The order that finds the most faults soonest is:
- Coupler height. Check every car against a coupler height gauge. Mismatched height causes uncoupling that looks random until you measure it, and it is the fastest thing on this list to check.
- Metal wheels. They roll noticeably more freely, so the locomotive works less and the train pulls more evenly, and they shed far less debris onto the railhead. Plastic wheels are a significant source of the black deposit people blame on the track.
- Weight to RP-20.1. Now that the car rolls properly and couples properly, weight is the remaining variable.
Doing it in this order means you are never weighting a car whose actual problem was something cheaper to fix.

Does RP-20.1 cover every scale?
No. It publishes figures for N, TT, HO, S and O among others, and there are scales it does not cover. Where your scale is absent, add weight until the car tracks reliably when pushed through your sharpest turnout, then match every other car to that figure. Consistency across the fleet matters more than any particular number.
