Best N Scale Track

The same rail joiner problem that develops slowly on an HO layout, mechanical connections loosening and corroding into dead sections over a few years, happens faster and is harder to fix in N scale simply because everything is smaller. A loose N scale rail joint is a fraction of a millimeter of misalignment, which is enough to stall a short wheelbase switcher or catch a wheel flange. Reaching under a benchwork module to solder a feeder onto N scale rail is also a fussier job than doing the same thing in HO.

There is no wrong order here. A lot of N scale layouts start from a boxed set and grow entirely by piece-by-piece purchases from that point forward, since Unitrack sections from any era of the product line are largely compatible with each other. Unitrack's locking joiners are far more reliable than a friction-fit rail joiner, but they are not immune to dirt. Run a cleaning car or a handheld pad over the whole layout on a regular schedule rather than waiting for a stall to show where the problem is, and feed power into the layout from more than one point on a large loop so no single section is depending on a long chain of joiners to receive current at all.
