How high should a backdrop be?
High enough that you cannot see over it from a normal viewing position, which is the only rule that matters and is usually higher than people first build.
The test is simple: stand where you will normally stand, look at the back of the layout, and see whether the backdrop meets the ceiling line of your vision or whether the real wall appears above it. If the wall shows, the illusion fails no matter how good the painting is.
For a layout at 40 inches viewed standing, 16 to 20 inches is usually enough. For a layout at chest height or higher, or one viewed by people of varying heights, more is better. Taller costs almost nothing in paint and a little in material, so err upwards.
The other dimension people forget is the corners. A backdrop that meets the adjacent wall at a sharp 90 degree corner shows a hard vertical line that reads immediately as a corner of a room. Coving the corner with a curve of thin material, or even just a radius of card, removes it entirely and is the single most effective backdrop trick there is.
Painted or printed?
Both work, and the choice is mostly about what you are hiding and how confident you are.
A painted sky is a graduated blue, lighter at the horizon, with optional clouds. It costs a quart of paint, it can be any length, it has no joins, and the graduated version requires no skill beyond blending two colours. It is the safe default and it never looks wrong.
A printed photographic backdrop gives you distant hills, a city skyline or a forest that would take real skill to paint. The trade is that it comes in fixed heights and lengths, so a long run needs joins, and the scale of the printed image has to match your scale or the trees read as the wrong size.
The most reliable combination is a painted sky above a printed or modelled treeline, because trees hide the join between the modelled scenery and the backdrop far better than a skyline does. If it is your first backdrop, a forest scene is the most forgiving thing you can choose.
